GANE, the Garden State Alliance for a New Economy, is a coalitional force that is tapping into the energy of the new wave of labor and immigrant organizing. We are building a strong labor-community alliance to support union organizing of the large and growing group of workers—many of them immigrants—at the bottom of the region’s increasingly bifurcated economy. Our focus is the port economy that surrounds the East Coast’s largest port.
There is immense potential for a transformative worker organizing effort in northern New Jersey that could expand opportunity for tens of thousands of workers and serve as a model for the nation as a new administration seeks ways to bring the nation out of a deep recession.
- Unions matter in New Jersey and key labor leaders have made the commitment to create a new kind of labor movement.
- The most important grassroots organizing in recent years has been in immigrant communities, and the region has a huge and growing immigrant population.
- New Jersey is a politically progressive state where concerted organizing efforts can win pioneering reforms that set regional trends.
- The port economy offers immense potential opportunity to create high-quality blue-collar jobs for local residents, and GANE will be at the forefront of a campaign to make good on that promise for over 100,000 workers in the trucking and logistics industries.
